Situated at the north end of
Khreschatyk. To mark ten years of independence, the main city square was
completely reconstructed. The work was finished in 2002. There is a very
large underground shopping complex, which covers most of the square from end
to end and is full of shops, bars and cafes. Also there is several
fountains, one of which has been designed especially for children to play in
(pictured below). The Metro trains are easily accessible as
Maidan
Nezalezhnosti Metro Station is situated here, which also links to
Khreschatyk Metro Staion.
1. Independency Column (50m),
topped with the statue of Archangel Mikhail (12m). The column is made
from a light composition stone and the statue is made of bronze. It was
unveiled to mark ten years of independence.
2. The Rainford television screen. The
largest screen of its kind in Europe.
3. The main entrance to the Globus.
which has three levels of shops at this end of the square and an
escalator link to the shops below the independence statue.
4. One of the fountains of the square
is decorated with statues of the legendary founders of the city
brothers Kiy, Schchek, Khoriv and their sister Lybed. Behind the
statue, in the photo can be seen the tall building of
Hotel Ukraina.

9. The Post Office.
This is the main post office in Kiev. It has stain glassed
windows depicting areas of Kyiv, which are best viewed from
inside.
10. There are six
fountains in the western end of the square, with seating
around the sides, for the public to admire their surroundings.
