1. Afghanistan 1979-1989 War memorial.

Unveiled: 1994

Location: Situated between Pechersk Lavra and The Great Patriotic War Museum, can be reached by trolley bus from Arcenalna Metro Station (red line).

Notes: Sculptor N. Olenik.

2. Bust Of Mikhail Glinka.

Unveiled: 1910.

Location: The City Garden.

Notes: Originally placed outside the city musical school, but was moved into the City Garden.

3. Equestrian Statue of Nikolai Shchors.

Unveiled: 1954.

Location: Situated at the junction of Taras Shevchenko Boulevard and Comintern Street which leads to Vokzal, central railway station.

Notes: Granite pedestal and bronze statue. The bronze base on which the horse stands. depicts episodes of civil war.

 

4. Grigory Petrovsky.

Unveiled: 1970's.

Location: Mikhail Grushevsky Street, between The National Philharmonic Building and Dynamo Kiev Stadium.

Notes: Sculptor, A. Oleynik.

5. Memorial to the Arcenal Workers.

Unveiled: 1923.

Location: Outside the front of Arcenalna Metro Station (red line).

Notes: Architect G. Granatkin and others. Faces on to the Arcenal Plant.

6. Memorial to the legendary founders of Kiev.

Unveiled: 1982.

Location: On the waters edge of Navodnytsky Park.

Notes: This magnificent monument, dedicated to the founders of Kiev, the brothers Kiy, Schchek and Khoriv and their sister Lybed. It is the work of the sculptor Vasily Borodai and the architect Nikolai Feshchenko. A good way to discover this monument is walk from Dnipro Metro Station (red line) south along the bank of the Dnipro River for 20 minutes. Or a walk down the hill through the park and under the main road from the Great Patriotic War Museum.

It is very traditonal for couples on their wedding day to throw bouquets of flowers over their shoulders on to the boat. If the flowers land on the boat, it is a sign of good luck for the future.

7. Monument to Bogdan Khmel'nitsky.

Unveiled: 1888

Location: Situated in Sofiskaya Square.

Notes: Hetman Bogdan Khmel'nitsky, (1595-1657) who led the Ukrainian peoples war of national liberation against the Polish nobility, which culminated in the reunification of Ukraine with Russia in 1654. The monument is 10.85 metres high and gives the illusion of being larger than it really is.

8. Monument to Cheka Soldiers.

Unveiled: 1967.

Location: Libidska. Situated outside Libidska Metro Station.

Notes: To the left of the statue across the road is The Institute of technical information.

9. Monument to Cyrill, Methodius, St. Andrew and Princess Olga.

Unveiled:

Location: Situated in Mikhailivska Square.

Notes: In 1920s the monument was stolen by the communists and for a long time was considered to be lost. But in 1995 during the reconstruction of the Mykhailivska Square it was discovered buried under the road. It was installed once again in its original spot.

10. Monument To General Nikolai Valutin.

Unveiled: 1948.

Location: Mariyinskiy Park.

Notes: Made of granite by Sculptor E. Vechetich. Nikolai Valutin was the 1st commander of the Ukrainian front that liberated Kiev. He was buried here in 1944 and the monument was placed over his grave in 1948.

11. Monumemt To Grigory Skovoroda.

Unveiled: 1976.

Location: Kontraktova Ploscha.

Notes: Made out of bronze and dedicated to the famous travelling philosopher and man of letters. the sculptor, Ivan Kavaleridze, was 89 years at the time of making.

12. Monument To Mikhail Grushevsky.

Unveiled: 1998.

Location: Vladimirskaya Street.

Notes: Sculptor V. Chepelik. To the left of the Statue is the The Former Pedagogic Museum.

13. Monument to Prince Vladimir Sviatoslavich.

Unveiled: 1853.

Location: Vladimirsky Spusk.

Notes: Bronze figure and chapel style pedestal, by sculptors Vasily Demuth-Malinovsky and Peter Klodt also architect Konstantin Thon. High up on the banks of the river Dnipro, with the foot bridge in view.

14. Monument To Yaroslav The Wise. (Andriyivsky Spusk.)

Unveiled:

Location: Andriyivsky Spusk.

Notes: Yaroslav The Wise, holding a model of Saint Sofia Cathedral. To the right is a Statue Of Taras Shevchenko.

Notes: Yaroslav The Wise, holding a model of Saint Sofia Cathedral.

16. Obelisk On Victory Square.

 

Unveiled: 1982.

Location: Victory Square.

Notes: Designed by architect V. Lashko. Erected in memory of the heroic city of Kiev. It stands at 43 metres high.

17. Pronya Prokopovna and Svirid Golohvastov.

Unveiled: 1999.

Location: Andriyivsky Spusk. To the right of Saint Andrews Church.

Notes: Two characters from the play "After Two Hares", written by M. Staritskiy.

18. Statue Of Lenin.

Unveiled: 1946.

Location: On a square paved with granite slabs, at the junction of Taras Shevchenko Boulevard and Khreshchatyk.

Notes: Made from carved and polished red labradorite by well known sculptor Sergei Merkurov. The granite pedestal was designed by architects Alexander Vlasov and Victor Yelizarov.

Unveiled: 1965.

Location: The City Garden.

24 The Friendship Arch.

  Unveiled: 1982.  Location: Khreschaty Park.

  Notes: Sculptor A. Skoblikov and Architect I. Ivanov and others. Dedicated to the unification of Russia and Ukraine, but called "The Yoke" by kievans. The rainbow shape arch is 50 metres in Diameter. There is a viewing deck here (right picture) where most of the east bank can be viewed, Troeschina and towards the north of the city. Podil and Obolon.

  

  Underneath the Friendship Arch there are two statues  The one in the left picture which is made of bronze and depicts a Russian and Ukrainian worker holding up The Soviet Order of Friendship of Peoples and the one in the right picture is made from granite and depicts the participants of the Pereyaslavska Rada.of 1654.

25. The Motherland Statue.

Built: 1981.

Location: On top of the Great Patriotic War Museum.

Notes: The figure is made of chrome nickel steel and weighs 550 tons. It is 62 metres high, but in total, including the base it stands at 102 metres! In the left hand the figure is holding shield which is decorated with the state symbol of USSR. In the right hand there is a sword which weighs 12 tons and is 16 metres long..
